If you have a Mac, the choice is easy: FireWire has been a part of every Mac since at least 2000. (To find out about FireWire, see the sidebar “FireWire or USB: That is the question” in this chapter.) However, differences exist between iPod generations.

Backing Up and Restoring Data
Under Windows XP, Windows Backup helps you plan for and recover from data loss by enabling you to back up and restore files, folders, and System State data (which includes the Registry) manually, or on a schedule. The new-and-improved backup tool supports all kinds of storage devices and media, including tape drives, logical drives, and removable disks. Recordable CDs and DVDs are minimally supported as restore-only media; the Windows Backup program (NTBackup.exe) does not support backup operations to CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, or DVD+RW media.

The Windows XP network bridge option is similar to a typical network bridge. It connects different network segments into a single network, appearing to exist as a single network subnet. This can have some benefits for small office and home office (SOHO) networks. The technology allows different network media to be bridged as well, which might include Ethernet, FireWire, and wireless Ethernet.
